Um pouco sobre o skinhead reggae...

Essa história começa na segunda metade dos anos 60, simultaneamente em duas ilhas: Jamaica e Reino Unido.

Em Kingston o mercado fonográfico estava á toda e a cada dia surgiam novos artistas tocando o ritmo local que acabava de surgir na ilha, o ska. Os artistas e selos estavam crescendo e seu campo de atuação também, e o ritmo local da ilha começou a se espalhar por outros cantos do mundo e em especial em outra ilha, o Reino Unido, mais precisamente na Inglaterra.

A cultura mod, que trazia scooters, ternos alinhados e gosto pela música negra (R'n'B, Jazz e Soul) estava estourada na terra da rainha e os moleques ligados a essa cultura começaram a ouvir também, além dos ritmos negros norte-americanos, o ska, trazido pelas mãos dos imigrantes jamaicanos que vivam em terras inglesas. O novo ritmo jamaicano ganhou destaque no país e foi inclusive apelidado de bluebeat pelos locais. Seguramente pode-se afirmar que se não fossem os mods o ska não alcançaria o sucesso que alcançou nas paradas inglesas e ao mesmo tempo pode-se dizer também que a cultura mod foi muito influenciada pelo ritmo jamaicanos (inclusive no visual, adaptando o pork pie dos rudies a vestimenta mod).

Prince Buster foi o primeiro a emplacar um som no top 40 inglês, com Al Capone. Como já foi citado acima, sem os mods o ska não seria o que foi, e o mesmo se aplica ao reggae e aos skinheads. Com o passar do tempo a cultura mod foi se dividindo em dois... Hard mods e psicodélicos. Os mods mais psicodélicos, cabeludos, estudantes de moda que estavam começando a ouvir sons diferentes das origens da cultura mod. E os hard mods que iam ao estádio de futebol fazer arruaça, mais rueiros e briguentos, que a cada dia mais estavam envolvidos com a música jamaicana e que mais tarde ganhariam o apelido de skinheads por cortarem seus cabelos cada vez mais curtos em resposta aos mods psicodélicos e aos hippies que surgiam com seus discursos paz-e-amor.

Nota-se que a cultura skinhead NADA tinha a ver com racismo, pelo contrário, eram garotos amantes da música negra e que só apareceram graças à essa música e à cultura mod... ISSO é a cultura skinhead ORIGINAL, tudo o que surgiu depois disso é plágio, e plágio mal feito! Enquanto isso, na Jamaica a música se modificava rapidamente e o ska já não tinha a mesma batida... A nova batida que surgia foi chamada de rocksteady e logo deu origem ao ritmo que fez a fama da ilha: O reggae que teve seus anos de ouro na década de 60 até o começo da década de 70, com MILHARES de discos produzidos e surgimento de novos selos, não só na jamaica (muito bem representado por Duke Reid e sua Treasure Isle e por Sir Coxsone Dodd e sua Studio One) como também na Inglaterra (Trojan Records, Pama e subgravadoras em geral) . Ao contrário do que a maioria das pessoas pensam, o reggae não tinha nada a ver com o rastafarianismo no começo, as letras falavam basicamente do cotidiano dos artistas nos guetos e principalmente eram temas de amor...

A musicalidade bastante característica, com teclados e riffs de baixo dando o compasso do som mostrava claramente que o novo ritmo era uma evolução do ska... E foi esse reggae que fez a cabeça dos moleques na Inglaterra na segunda metade da década. 66, 67... É nessa época que começa a febre do reggae no país.

Novamente os imigrantes jamaicanos residentes na Inglaterra, mas desta vez junto com os skinheads foram os grandes responsáveis pelo estouro do ritmo na terra da rainha. Enquanto os skins iam as grandes lojas e pediam cada vez mais discos do novo ritmo, os jamaicanos faziam a mesma coisa nas lojas independentes e de pequeno porte que se instalavam nos bairros mais afastados e ambos pediam aos djs que o novo ritmo fosse tocado. Isso foi o que fez o reggae estourar. Nomes como Laurel Aitken, Clancy Eccles, The Paragons, Toots and The Maytals, Desmond Dekker e até os Wailing Wailers (Bob Marley, Peter Tosh e Bunny Wailer) faziam esse tipo de reggae, que mais tarde foi denominado "Skinhead Reggae" (pela razão óbvia de terem sido os skinheads os maiores ouvintes desse ritmo na época) ou "Early Reggae". E assim como os moleques de Londres sabiam da existência dos seus músicos favoritos, os músicos da Kingston começaram a saber da existência dos garotos de cabeça raspada que veneravam a música jamaicana.

Isso fez com que os artistas começassem a escrever temas para os skinheads, como "Skinheads a bash them" escrito por Laurel Aitken e interpretado por Claudette and The Corporation, "Hooligan" dos Wailing Wailers, e até mesmo músicas sem voz mas com títulos que sugeriam a ligação, que é o caso de "Skinheads don't fear" dos Hot Rod Allstars... A banda Symarip, também conhecida como Pyramids ou Seven Letters, que fazia reggae na época lançou inclusive um disco intitulado "skinhead moonstomp", que trazia do começo ao fim músicas citando a subcultura inglesa... Uma jogada e tanto, já que o reggae já estava estourado no país graças aos "homenageados"...

Na Inglaterra começavam a surgir artistas tocando o som vindo da jamaica, com destaque para Judge Dread, o primeiro branco a emplacar um hit no top 40 de reggae inglês. Em 1969 a cultura skinhead alcançou seu auge... Uma moda desde os bairros mais pobres até os mais fartos que se espalhou pela Inglaterra e trazia com ela o amor pela música negra, principalmente jamaicana.

Com o passar do tempo a cultura skinhead foi "evoluindo" e a partir dos anos 70 foram surgindo cada vez mais "sub-tipos", o que enfraqueceu a cultura. O reggae também não era mais o mesmo. Enquanto na Inglaterra o reggae ganhava novas influências da década que surgia, dando origem ao disco reggae ou club reggae, que era o reggae tocado nas boates londrinas, nas ruas de Kingston o rastafarianismo se popularizava cada vez mais e vários artistas da música popular da ilha começaram a misturar ritmos africanos e temas religiosos a sua música... Assim nascia o roots reggae, mas isso já é outra história...
